The Last Cicada

Title: One Plus One Equals One. A new bold feature film about loss, grief, pain, and then rebirth.

Seventeen-year-old Sydney has carried the weight of loss since her father died when she was just thirteen. Now, believing she’s on her final life, she’s haunted by a strange, otherworldly presence — the Cicada Man, a towering creature with the body of a man, wings shimmering like glass, and the head of a cicada. In the quiet corners of her closet, she confides in him, seeking guidance on how to reclaim her fading connection with her best friend, Rachel.

Rachel, also seventeen, lost her father at thirteen and has become the queen of popularity, hiding her pain behind a mask of confidence. Unbeknownst to Sydney, Rachel has also begun speaking to the Cicada Man, drawn by the same mysterious allure that binds their fates together.

The Cicada Man offers cryptic advice: to win back Rachel, Sydney must embrace the paradox of love and loss — even if it means sharing her heart with others, sleeping with the same men, and unraveling the strange mathematics of their lives. He hints that in calculus, “one plus one can equal one,” symbolizing the entwined destinies of the girls — lives that mirror and complete each other in ways they never imagined.

As the cicadas emerge in their 13- or 17-year broods, Sydney and Rachel begin to realize their lives are intricately linked by more than coincidence — by cycles of renewal, pain, and rebirth. Together, they confront the mysteries of love, grief, and the strange mathematics that bind their worlds, discovering that sometimes, the greatest answers lie in accepting the interconnectedness of all things before time runs out.

In The Last Cicada, destiny is a cycle, and the only way forward is to listen to the whispers of the cicadas — and to each other.
